Third Xbox to be 6 times as powerful as 360

Xbox-360

Here’s some more rumour mill stuff, mind you don’t get rumour-flour over everything.

According to a number of places, the next generation of Microsoft’s console will be shipping with an AMD 6000 series GPU, which could offer up to 6 times the power of the current console, along with the trimmings of 3D, 1080p output, DirectX 11 and multi-display output, though I have to wonder on the usefulness of that last one.

Not only do we have that rumour, but we also have the rumour that the next console, whatever it may be called, is facing a release date as early as the back end of 2013. This would match up with what I’d heard before I started writing on these here internets; that Sony and Microsoft were planning to have new consoles out by that year, but that is obviously a far cry from any sort of confirmation.

Now, this kind of makes sense, what with the 360 turning 7 years old in November. While consoles are obviously designed to have more longevity than your average PC, which would be considered ageing long before now, this is still pretty old. There’s only so much you can squeeze out of the same old hardware year after year, even if you do get a better grasp of the API’s etc.

No matter when it releases, I will be keeping an eye out for news on this, being the Xbox fanboy I am. I just really hope they don’t call it “Xbox 720” or something even more stupid like “Xbox Next”.
